Fisher Investments – Petroleum Inventories (Figure 2)
Over the last 15 weeks, total US petroleum inventories (including the SPR) have fallen by 64 million barrels, or at a rate of about 610,000 barrels per day (see figure 1). This reflects drawdown of crude oil inventories (both out of commercial stocks and the SPR) and a massive decline in diesel inventories over the last four weeks (see figure 2).
The trend reflects non-US supply shortages which have caused a sharp decline in net imports of crude and refined products. In fact, over the 5 months, the United States has actually become a net exporter of refined petroleum products for the first time in at least two decades.
